What are the Benefits of an Electric Vehicle?

Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular here in the UK, with around 1 million fully-electric vehicles reported on British roads at the end of January 2024, according to Zap-Map. However, their ever-growing popularity comes at no surprise when you consider the benefits that are to be had by owning an electric car. From reducing our carbon footprints  and costing less to run, to outperforming their counterparts and the concept that they can now be charged anywhere, here are just a few of the advantages that electric vehicles have to offer:

They’re better for the planet

One of the benefits of owning an electric car has been, from the outset, that they’re better for the environment than petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. It’s a considerable advantage over more conventionally-run vehicles, which is the most common reason as to why people have been embracing electric cars in recent years.

Running costs are lower

According to EY, consumers have been looking to electric cars more so in the last couple of years because of their fears over rising oil prices. This means that, even with an exponential rise of gas and electricity costs, charging an electric vehicle to full capacity is almost always cheaper than filling up the tank of a petrol or diesel-powered car, states EVBox.

Not only is it cheaper to charge an electric car than it would be to fill the tank of a petrol car, but they’re also more cost-effective when it comes to general maintenance and wear and tear. There are fewer moving parts contained within an electric car than there are in a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. Over the course of its life, an electric car will be less expensive to run all round when compared with the running costs of a petrol or diesel vehicle.

It makes for a smoother driving experience

You may have noticed that electric vehicles have no trouble getting off the line at red lights, and that’s because they’re more responsive than petrol and diesel cars. Similar to automatic petrol and diesel cars, electric vehicles only have one gear to speak of, meaning that the driver can focus more on the road ahead of them. This makes for a more comfortable and stress-free drive when compared with a journey taken in a petrol or diesel car.

They’re quiet when in motion

Something you’ll never have to worry about in a fully-functioning electric vehicle is noise. Electric cars are known for their quiet and calming performance in general. The reason as to why they’re so quiet is their complete lack of an internal combustion engine. Petrol and diesel cars are known for being noisy when in operation, whereas electric vehicles are almost completely silent.

Not only is this better in residential areas and late at night, but it also ensures that you can hear other hazards on the road, such as sirens from emergency service vehicles and beeping horns that are alerting you to something that you should be aware of. In turn, you’ll have a relaxing ride in an electric car, made possible by a combination of smooth performance, lack of gears and low-noise operation.

They’re low-maintenance

As discussed previously, not only are electric cars cheaper to run and to power, but they also require less maintenance. As well as minimising costs for the owner, it also mitigates any inconvenience caused by having to repeatedly visit garages and repair shops to have any issues rectified. Where electric cars don’t come without any problems at all, they’re highly-unlikely to experience the same volume of issues, when compared to the problems faced by petrol and diesel car owners.

They can be charged almost anywhere

One of the greatest benefits of having an electric car is that they can be recharged almost anywhere. Whether you’re on holiday or at the supermarket, there will be a commercial charging point available for you to charge your electric vehicle. From charging it before you leave the house to taking advantage of a commercial charging point at the office, there’s no greater benefit than knowing that your car will be ready to use when you get behind the wheel.

Gone are the days of looking around for the nearest petrol station if you have an electric car to rely upon. This is especially useful at the end of the working day, which is why commercial EV charging installation is something that an increasing number of business owners are implementing at their premises.
